The song of wood
At the heart of every Bösendorfer piano is the resonance spruce. Our spruce grows in Austria, at an altitude of 800 m, an ideal location that promises a tight grain and regular growth. Alternating seasons, sun, wind and cold gently bring it to maturity. Then it's time to fell and split it - only in winter, when it's out of sap - and let it dry naturally in the open air, outside our workshops, for five years. This rare species plays such an important role in the purity of the sound, that our pianos are made with over 80 % of it, a figure higher than any other manufacturer. If we include drying in the manufacturing time, it takes six years to transform a tree into a piano.
Austrian craftsmanship
A Bösendorfer isn't just an investment. It's a precious heritage that spans generations. Bösendorfer craftsmen bring out the beauty of each piano, giving it its own identity, color and brilliance, the result of authentic Viennese craftsmanship. The Bösendorfer sound takes a year to achieve. This passion, shared by the craftsmen, is felt from the very first note.
Hand-spun bass strings
All Bösendorfer bass strings are hand-spun using a proprietary Bösendorfer process. Each string consists of a steel core, around which one or two copper strings are wound, depending on the desired pitch. This too is a major element of the Bösendorfer sound. The Bösendorfer sound, hand-sewn for generations.
Traditional sand casting
Our frames are made using the traditional sand casting process, for perfect acoustics. Manufactured in Austria, they are stored in the open air for six months, outside our workshop, to eliminate any internal stresses created during the pouring of the molten metal. Our frames are then able to withstand a tension of almost twenty tons. Generations of stability.
